Level 5 Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety

Level 5 Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety:

Level 5 Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety replaces the NVQ 4 and is equivalent to the NEBOSH Diploma level. It is a 'competence-based' qualification. This means you undertake practical and work-related tasks designed to help you develop your skills and knowledge, thus enabling you to demonstrate your competence in the Health and Safety role you already fulfill.

The Level 5 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety is based on national standards. The standards say what you, as a competent person in a Health and Safety role, will be expected to do. So, as you progress through your Diploma you will compare your skills and knowledge with these standards as you go, so you can see what you need to do to meet them.

Who can take them?

The Level 5 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety is available to those performing a full time occupation in Health and Safety and should ideally report to senior management or director level personnel.

The Level 5 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety: Content

The qualification will be assessed on assignments and mainly a portfolio of evidence. A qualified assessor will view online evidence that you upload to your portfolio and question you about it and work you carry out in your workplace.  Your knowledge and understanding as well as your actual performance will be assessed against the National Standard.  Your assessor will 'sign-off,' electronically, individual units within the Diploma when you have reached the required standard.

How is it delivered?

The qualification is delivered using our online paper free system.  You will receive logging in details to the electronic system once you have satisfied the assessor that you really have the scope within your current role to be able to gather evidence, report to the higher management tier in your organisation and to exert influence at that level.  You will gather evidence that you are competent in the areas directed by the standard and upload it to the relevant part of the portfolio.

The Diploma is split into units which are in turn split into criteria.  You decide which criteria your evidence satisfies and why.  The assessor then checks it and determines your competency in relation to those criteria.  Units are progressively satisfied and the system allows “Sign Off”.

What does the candidate achieve?

Upon successful completion of the Level 5 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice the Institution of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH) accept this qualification for candidates to further apply for membership at Graduate level membership (GradIOSH) and upon completion of an open book assessment followed by a Peer Interview, you can achieve Chartered level membership (CMIOSH).
