A broad foundation in occupational health and safety
The National General Certificate is the most widely held health and safety qualification in the UK, with over 100,000 people having gained the award. It covers the main legal requirements for health and safety in the UK, the identification and control of workplace hazards, and the practical application of this knowledge.
Designed to help non-specialists discharge workplace health and safety duties more effectively, the course provides a valuable overview and a sound basis for further professional study. The classroom course normally runs one day per week for 10 weeks, with 40 hours of suggested self-study time.

Course information
Requirements, assessments and certification
Pre-course requirements
No previous health and safety knowledge is required, although it is advisable that learners have a basic understanding of health and safety. NEBOSH suggests that those taking this qualification should have a minimum English proficiency level equivalent to an IELTS score of 6.0 or higher. Classroom learners need to attend classes and assessments on the specific dates and times shown on the course timetable; learning is guided and supported by a class tutor.
Assessments
The qualification is divided into two units, each assessed separately. Unit GNC1 is a 24-hour Open Book Examination. Unit GNC2 is a practical assessment to be carried out in your workplace or another workplace and submitted to NEBOSH in the same way as the GNC1 examination. The GNC2 practical assessment must be submitted on or before 10 working sdays from the GNC2 examination date.
This is a 10-day study course with 1 examination day with suggested 40hours self study time.
Certification
A NEBOSH certificate will be issued to learners who have successfully completed the course and assessments.
How is this qualification recognised?
The NEBOSH National General Certificate meets the academic requirements for Technician membership (TechIOSH) of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and Associate membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).
The NEBOSH National General Certificate is accredited at Level 3 within the National Qualification Framework (NQF) by the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) in England, the Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS) in Wales and the Council for Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) in Northern Ireland.

Payment and resits
Payment is taken when the course booking is confirmed. Invoice payments must be made within 30 days or before the course starts, whichever is sooner. Examination resits incur an additional fee. All course fees are subject to VAT.
