Tungsten Inert Gas Shielded Welding Gas (TIG)
Objectives:
To provide delegates with the necessary skills, knowledge and safe Ā Ā Ā working practices to enable them to produce a range of welded joints Ā Ā Ā in aluminium, stainless and mild steel in a variety of positions.
Pre-course requirements:
Delegates should have completed the introduction to Tungsten Inert Ā Ā Ā Gas Shielded welding course or have demonstatable prior skills and Ā Ā Ā knowledge, along with an understanding of workplace health & safety.
PROGRAMME
Introduction
- Review of the tungsten inert gas process to include the safe setting of the Ā equipment and its economic use
- The necessary theoretical knowledge to undertake the practical skills outlined Ā within the programme
Personal Safety
- Use of protective clothing appropriate to the process to be undertaken i.e. goggles, gloves, aprons etc.
- Isolation procedures for gas and electrical systems
- Remedial action in the event of burns
- Routine inspection of electrical cables, gas pipes and fittings
- Action in the event of arc eye and gas leaks
Equipment
- Safe setting up and economic operation of welding equipment to include:
- Connection of gas and electrical equipment
- Fitting and adjustment of equipment
- Selection of the tungsten polarity
- Checking of system for safe use
- Adjustment of arc length
Preparation
- Preparation of the material to be welded to produce correct joints, gas etc using appropriate equipment
- Technique to be used on the various joints and materials
- Methods of minimising distortion and welding difficulties
Practical
- Demonstration and individual practice of weldedĀ joints using a selection of aluminium, steel and stainless steel sections of various thickness:
- Tee joint ā horizontal/vertical ā aluminium ā stainless steel
- Tee joint ā vertical ā aluminium ā stainless steel
- Corner joint ā vertical ā aluminium ā stainless steel
- Pipe butt ā mild steel
- Pipe butt (purge) ā stainless steel
Inspection and Assessment
To visually examine the weld for:
- Penetration
- Porosity
- Undercutting
- Imperfections
- Recognition of the causes of imperfections and identification of corrective action
Outcomes:
Successful completion of the course will result in the issue of a SETAĀ certificate of completion.
This training could also contribute to the achievement of a PEO NVQ Level 2 Ā Ā unit Tungsten Inert Gas Shielded Welding/or Testing to BS 4872 Pt 1/2
