Learn to operate a forklift truck safely

This three-day novice course is for people who want to learn to drive a forklift truck. Training combines classroom-based forklift safety instruction with practical driving exercises.

Learners cover relevant health and safety legislation, pre-use checks, load stability, restricted-area driving, stacking, de-stacking, vehicle loading and refuelling or battery charging before completing theory and practical tests.

Course content

What the course covers

01

Legislation and responsibilities

Relevant legislation under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, LOLER 1998, PUWER 1998 and ACOP L117.

Forklift safety fundamentals

A forklift safety classroom session and an introduction to the forklift truck.

Pre-use checks and stability

Pre-use checks, general forklift truck safety and the stability of loading.

Core driving skills

Basic driving skills and driving safely in a restricted area.

Load handling

Stacking and de-stacking pallets, together with vehicle loading.

06

Testing and routine operations

Theory and practical tests, plus refuelling or battery charging.

Requirements, assessment and certification

Pre-course requirements

None.

Assessment

Assessment takes place at the end of the third day and includes a theory test and a practical test.

Certification

Successful completion of the course results in the issue of a SETA certificate of completion.

Payment and resits

Payment is taken when the course booking is confirmed. Invoice payments must be made within 30 days or before the course starts, whichever is sooner. Examination resits incur an additional fee. All course fees are subject to VAT.
